/>Photo credit: Reece Straw “This new performance by Beth Kettel explores ‘Morphic Resonance’ - the theory that living organisms are connected via invisible fields, and that our minds can stretch beyond our brains and bodies across time and space. The performance moves through the four natural elements - Earth, Water, Air and Fire – and leads towards a fifth element – Ether – which connects the material world with metaphysical realms. The five elements remain omnipresent archetypes embedded deep within the unconscious, while also being unpredictable forces in constant motion in nature - part of an eternal cycle of destruction and creation. In the performance, the elements act as diferent chapters or visions, reflecting parts of the psyche and stages of death in the dissolution and transformation of the body and the ego. Bringing together ideas from psychology, alchemy and spirituality, this immersive experimental performance morphs across spatialised sound, reactive costume and installation. Wrangling between the light and the dark, force and initiation, the work reflects on the humbling and healing power of the elements, as well as perception, telepathy and consciousness. Beth Kettel’s work encompasses sculpture, moving-image, writing, sound and performance. For her exhibition at Eastside Projects she is developing a new sculptural installation with reactive materials, which will explore internal and external navigation and the ways our internal worlds are communicated, translated and distorted externally and vice versa. This work has been informed by recent residencies at Launchpad LaB, Champagne-Mouton, France and Fieldwork, Wales 2023.”In navigation, Dead Reckoning involves estimating a current position based on a past position (factoring speed, time, and direction of travel). A Reckoning is a time when somebody’s current position is judged based on their past actions (factoring time and unpleasant truths). The work explores internal and external navigation in this time of personal, spiritual &amp; global reckoning.The work exists in three states - the lower, dream and shadow state. The installation physically changes state with programmed lights, lighting the inside and outside of the hanging at intervals, obscuring and revealing details in the work at different points. experience. The work is split into three compositions exploring emotional and physical defence mechanisms in human psychology, armour and defensive strategies in other species. For example: thanatosis - the defensive strategy of playing dead also known as death-feigning, which is a reactive anti-predator behavioural strategy, which can also include sticking out tongues, emptying bowels, and excreting foul-smelling fluids to convince predators it’s past the expiration date, as well as bioluminescent bodies, camouflage, extensions and mimicry.
